The game takes places far in the future after Doom 2, and for whatever reason glosses over the fact that Earth was destroyed by the demons and everyone fled Earth to find a new planet. If you actually listen to the audio logs in Hell you'll find the character you play as is the Doomguy from Doom 1 and 2 and he went to hell and after destroying the Icon of Sin, they somehow managed to capture and entomb him. And this isn't a reboot of original Doom, this is literally a direct sequel to Doom 2 that simply ignores or omits everything that happened with the Demons coming to earth.
